Kinstrife

When two brothers of Ulthuan sail to the land of their ancient enemies on a mission of destruction, there is more than meets the eye to their brotherhood, for unseen rivalries and tensions simmer just below the surface…

Writer’s Commentary

This is a story that centres around two High Elf brothers and, well, let’s just say it doesn’t end well for one of them. In my original notes for this story, the two brothers were Kurgan tribesmen preparing to mount a raid on a neighbouring tribe (for reasons I hadn’t quite figured out) but the more I worked it up, the more I realised that by keeping the main characters human I was keeping it grounded in reality rather than stretching it into the worlds of Warhammer as I ought to be. I liked the outline of the story I had, so I wanted to keep that and began casting about for other races I could put into it and still keep the basic outline, if not the details. Races came and went, but none quite fit until I came to the Elves. At first the plot began to meander down familiar roads of the a Dark Elf betrayal, but then I realised that it would be more interesting to tell a story of betrayal from a race you wouldn’t normally think of when betrayal’s mentioned; the High Elves. So when the final reveal comes at the end, it’s all the more shocking for it. As it turned out, I had so much fun with writing the story, it practically wrote itself and I came back to these characters with the novel, Defenders of Ulthuan.
